Veterinary Diagnostics and Your Pet’s Health
Diagnostics include the breadth of laboratory and imaging work we do in order to better understand your pet’s entire being. What we cannot learn from physical exams, we learn from diagnostics. We send out tests for samples of blood, urine, even skin, and we can even get a view of internal organs, joints, and more right here in our animal hospital. When we have a more comprehensive view of your pet’s overall health—from nose to tail and everything in between—we can treat them better.
How We Use Professional Veterinary Laboratories
To analyze your pet's diagnostics, we send tests out to professional veterinary laboratories and you can expect results back within 24-48 hours. Our laboratory partners have the capabilities to test for the following:
- Complete blood count (CBCs)
- Blood chemistry panel
- Fecal testing
- Feline Leukemia (FeLV)
- Thyroid testing
- Parasite testing
- And more!
The beauty of diagnostics is that we do not only suggest these tests when we suspect your pet is ill; we recommend routine samples as well! Understanding your pet’s condition when they are healthy helps us better detect early signs of illness.
Seeing Your Pet in a New Light with Imaging Technology
In addition to our laboratory work, we can also use innovative imaging technology to see beneath the skin. We use digital radiographs, or X-rays, ultrasound, and echocardiograms to examine organs and the musculoskeletal system. Digital X-rays create a detailed still image of your pet’s skeletal system and even internal organs. Ultrasound and echocardiograms, on the other hand, use sound waves to create a live image of organs, joints and more. While ultrasound can be used widely across the body, echocardiograms are specifically used to examine the heart.
While digital X-rays can be done with ease by our staff here, we entrust your pet to a board-certified radiologist who comes into our clinic to perform ultrasounds and echocardiograms. He is available on-demand, within 24 hours, and also lends us his expertise to review any X-rays and give a specialist opinion.
